The Northern Kentucky CVB is under fire for posting on its Web site this description of the new Creation Museum: "This 'walk through history' museum will counter evolutionary natural history museums that turn countless minds against Christ and Scripture."
How do you deal with religious/ideological attractions in your area? On the one hand, most CVBs are tax-supported and must espouse a separation of church and state. On the other hand, religious attractions are a significant portion of the tourism industry in some areas.
The Creation Museum seems to cross a line, in my opinion, displaying blatant pseudoscience as fact and taking a confrontational viewpoint against people who don't share its beliefs. I would have a hard time promoting that attraction. However, it's not hard for me to promote other religious sites, like the Mormon Temple in Kirtland or Behalt in Berlin, where the experience isn't presented as a challenge to other beliefs, but rather an opportunity to learn about a religion and its followers. What would you do in this situation? Have you dealt with it before?
When promoting any event or tourism attraction, the description is very important. By using the line, "This 'walk through history' museum will counter evolutionary natural history museums that turn countless minds against Christ and Scripture," - it can alienate potential visitors who might go to the museum to learn another point of view.
I'm sure there are many ways to word the description to appeal to a broader audience, without offense.
